An educational guide based on current research.
In recent years, the term "spike protein" has been appearing more and more frequently in conversations about health. For many people it sounds like a controversial topic but behind this term lies specific biology, real scientific research, and a growing number of questions worth seeking answers to.
This article has one goal: to explain in simple terms what the spike protein is, where it comes from, how it may affect health, and what we can do to support the body in eliminating it.
What Is the Spike Protein?
The spike protein is the distinctive structure on the surface of the SARS-CoV-2 virus — the same virus that causes COVID-19. It resembles spikes on the surface of the virus, hence the name.
Its role is to enable the virus to enter the body's cells. It does this by attaching to ACE2 receptors found in the lungs, heart, blood vessels, brain, and many other organs. Without the spike protein, the COVID-19 virus would not be able to infect a single cell of the human body.
Where Does the Spike Protein Come From in the Body?
The spike protein can enter our body in two ways:
- Through infection with SARS-CoV-2. During a natural COVID-19 infection, the virus produces the spike protein as part of its mechanism for entering cells.
- Through mRNA vaccines. COVID-19 vaccines based on mRNA technology work by instructing the body's cells to produce the spike protein themselves, so the immune system can learn to recognise and fight it.
The stabilised spike protein from vaccines may have similar harmful mechanisms to the viral spike protein. Spike protein has been detected directly in cardiomyocytes and blood clots in patients with myocarditis and acute stroke.
How Long Can the Spike Protein Stay in the Body?
This is one of the key findings of recent years. Viral and vaccine-encoded spike proteins have been detected in people for at least 6–15 months after vaccination or infection in those with post-acute complications, suggesting the spike protein as a possible major contributing factor to long COVID — with clear persistence in the human body due to the absence of an innate mechanism for its elimination.
This means that for some people, particularly those with weakened immune systems, the spike protein is not automatically and quickly removed from the body.
How Can the Spike Protein Affect Health?
Research points to several areas in which the spike protein may cause health problems:
🫀 Cardiovascular System
The viral spike protein has been linked to adverse effects such as blood clots, brain fog, organising pneumonia, and myocarditis.
🧠 Nervous System
The spike protein can cross the blood–brain barrier, affecting cognitive function. Brain fog, difficulty concentrating, and memory problems are among the most frequently reported symptoms of long COVID.
🛡️ Immune System
Spike proteins may deplete glutathione, the body's main antioxidant, leading to fatigue, oxidative stress, and slower recovery.
🩸 Blood and Coagulation
The spike protein can activate platelets and promote the formation of micro clots — tiny clots that can impair blood flow in small vessels.
🔥 Inflammation
The spike protein activates mast cells and inflammatory pathways, which can lead to chronic inflammation in various tissues and organs.
Who Is Most at Risk?
Not everyone who has had COVID-19 or been vaccinated will experience problems related to the spike protein. Research indicates that those at greater risk include people:
- with a weakened or dysregulated immune system
- with deficiencies in key nutrients (particularly glutathione, vitamin D, zinc)
- with chronic inflammatory diseases
- who had a severe case of COVID-19
- who developed long COVID symptoms after vaccination or infection
What Can We Do? The Detoxification Protocol
The good news is that there are natural strategies to support the body in eliminating the spike protein. The best known is the McCullough Protocol, developed by Dr Peter McCullough and published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
This protocol proposes a baseline spike protein detoxification based on oral nattokinase, bromelain, and curcumin. This approach carries enormous potential as the foundation of clinical care, supplemented by additional therapeutic agents to support the resolution of complications following SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 vaccination.
Three Pillars of the Protocol
🌿 Nattokinase
An enzyme derived from natto — traditional Japanese fermented soya beans. Nattokinase directly breaks down fibrin resistant to fibrinolysis derived from the spike protein, while bromelain enhances fibrinolysis. Nattokinase degrades spike proteins, rendering them inactive, and supports healthy blood flow.
🍍 Bromelain
A proteolytic enzyme from the pineapple stem. Bromelain and curcumin block the ACE2 receptor, preventing the spike protein from attaching. It also has anti-inflammatory and anti-coagulant properties.
🌿 Curcumin
The active ingredient in turmeric. Bromelain and curcumin inhibit the NF-κB signalling pathway induced by the spike protein, leading to suppression of inflammatory molecules.
Additional Support Strategies
💊 Supplements supporting detoxification:
- NAC (N-acetylcysteine) — a precursor of glutathione, the body's main antioxidant
- Glutathione — direct antioxidant support
- Vitamin C — supports immunity and glutathione production
- Zinc and selenium — essential for proper immune function
- Quercetin — a natural mast cell stabiliser and anti-inflammatory agent
🥦 Diet
Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts, rich in sulphur necessary for glutathione synthesis, support the body's natural detoxification processes. A diet rich in natural foods, avoiding processed food and sugar, is the foundation.
🧖 Sauna and Physical Activity
Practices such as sauna and cold exposure can support circulation, immunity, and cellular renewal. Regular exercise supports lymphatic drainage, which is key to removing toxins from the body.
💧 Hydration
Drinking an adequate amount of clean water supports the natural filtration processes of the kidneys and liver.
😴 Sleep and Recovery
During sleep the body carries out key repair processes. Good, regular sleep is one of the most powerful detoxification mechanisms.
🧘 Nervous System Support
Chronic stress weakens the immune system and slows cleansing processes. Relaxation techniques, breathing exercises, and working with the nervous system are just as important as supplements.
The Detoxification Approach According to Dr Jonas's Method
In a holistic approach to detoxification such as Dr Josef Jonas's method, the spike protein fits into the broader context of the body's toxic burden. Biological toxins (including pathological proteins) are one of the nine categories of toxins identified in this method.
Spike protein detoxification should not be seen as a one-off supplementation protocol, but as part of a comprehensive approach to health encompassing:
- identification and elimination of all sources of toxic burden
- support for the immune, lymphatic, and liver systems
- rebuilding the gut microbiome
- working with emotional and stress-related burden
Summary
The spike protein is a real health challenge for some people — both those who have had COVID-19 and those who have experienced post-vaccine complications. The science in this area is constantly evolving, but available research clearly points to the need for actively supporting the body in its elimination.
The good news is that the human body has a remarkable capacity for self-repair — provided we give it the right tools. Proper diagnostics and selection of detoxification and supportive supplements, a good diet, exercise, sleep, and stress reduction are not just a trend — they are concrete support for the detoxification mechanisms that each of us possesses.
